The primary function of a diesel engine's lubrication system is to reduce friction between moving parts. When components of an engine, such as pistons, crankshafts, and camshafts, move at high speeds and under significant loads, friction can generate heat and wear. The lubrication system supplies oil that forms a thin film between these moving parts, significantly decreasing direct contact and thus minimizing friction. This reduction not only enhances the engine's operating efficiency but also extends the life of the engine by preventing parts from wearing out prematurely.

While increasing fuel efficiency can be a secondary benefit of effective lubrication, it is not the main function. Similarly, providing electrical power and improving sound quality are not roles served by the lubrication system; those functions are handled by other systems within the engine and vehicle. Therefore, the primary focus of the lubrication system remains its critical role in reducing friction and facilitating smooth operation of the engine components.
